St. Joseph Catholic Church Belltower

Completion: 2010
Size: ± 30 sq.m.
Location: Grande Prairie, Alberta

The new St Joseph Catholic Church Bell Tower was an addition to the existing sanctuary and parish buildings. Careful attention was taken in the design of the tower so that it fit in with the surrounding buildings. Intended to compliment rather than impose itself on the existing church the tower is nonetheless an important part of the visual and symbolic expression of St. Joseph’s.

Cues were taken from the materiality, texture and color schemes of the original building to develop a plan for the Bell Tower. 3D modeling software was utilized to explore various forms and material combinations which could then be situated on the site virtually to create images of how the Bell Tower would look in place.

The Bell Tower has become an important part of the identity of St Josephs Catholic Church and along with the sanctuary steeple is a highly visible landmark in Grande Prairie.
